Our Story
Hemp Oi was born in the heart of Vietnam’s highlands, where our founder, Phuong Thao Tran, discovered fields of lush hemp and crossed paths with May, a spirited 14-year-old H’Mong girl who had left school to help her family when her grandmother fell ill. As they walked together, May shared her dream of returning to class and one day seeing the world beyond her village.
Listening to May’s story, Thao learned that her community had been hand-weaving hemp fabric for generations using methods both beautiful and deeply sustainable, yet unknown beyond their mountains. Inspired by their skill and the extraordinary promise of hemp, Thao envisioned a way to bring these time-honored traditions to the world, creating opportunity while preserving a priceless cultural heritage.
Fueled by that purpose, she founded Hemp Oi: a brand dedicated to empowering rural artisans, promoting eco-friendly design, and weaving a future rooted in sustainability and hope. From our humble beginnings in the highlands, Hemp Oi is driven by the mission to be a force for positive change — a living testament to resilience, heritage, and the transformative power of purpose.
